How to Succeed in Your First Job
Your first job is always going to be something you remember, and we will give you all the tips needed to make you successful.
Setting yourself up for success
Succeeding in your first job is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that sets the stage for your working journey.
We have come up with these tips to make your work life a positive experience.
Perception & Productivity
- What the customer sees when they walk in can determine their desire to spend money. Don’t lean on counters or stand around in groups chatting when you have customers around.
- Keep your phone in your bag & turn off notifications – Don’t worry you will still be able to check it when you have a break or after your shift has finished
- Be proactive - eagerly taking on responsibilities or asking for jobs to do after you have completed one demonstrates a strong work ethic.
Communication is key
- Verbal and written communication is important. Speak clearly and try not to mumble.
- Actively seek feedback - it is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth.
- Establish strong connections - building relationships will foster a positive and supportive work environment.
Growth Mindset
- Adaptability - be open to learning new skills and adapting to changes.
- Approach challenges with resilience and a solution-oriented mindset! - turning setbacks into opportunities for learning and growth.
Grooming and Presentation
It is good to have a clean and hygienic appearance in the workplace as part of your personal and professional success.
Easy and useful grooming tips:
- Clean and tidy hair – if your hair is longer than your ears it should be tied up.
- Personal Hygiene – shower each day and use soap, use deodorant, brush your teeth twice a day
- Uniform or clothing clean and ironed/free from wrinkles
- Minimal make-up, if any – keep the glam make-up for another time
- Trimmed and neat facial hair
- If you have piercings, consider using clear bars or rings
Remember that even if you have a uniform for work, what you wear to an interview or to collect your uniform is important.
