Knowing what to do: Public Transport Etiquette
Riding public transport is one of the main ways to get around for teenagers, offering freedom and independence. But with great freedom comes responsibility! Here's how to be a courteous and respectful.
The unspoken rules
Whether it is the bus, train or tram there are some key things that you should know.
Queue: Don't be that person who cuts in line. Wait your turn to board, let people off first, and have your pass ready to avoid hold-ups.
Volume: Keep your voice down and try not to make phone calls. Loud music through headphones is a no-go – other passengers don't want to hear your stuff.
Seating: If you see someone who needs a seat more than you – elderly folks, people with disabilities, or those carrying heavy items – offer it up. It's a kind gesture that goes a long way. Be mindful of hidden disabilities, they use a sunflower lanyard to highlight that the person has a hidden disability.
Baggage: Be thoughtful with backpack or bag. Don't hog space by leaving it on a seat or blocking the aisle.
Food: Public transport isn't a picnic area. Avoid messy foods with strong smells, and dispose of rubbish properly.
Tech: Texting is fine, but avoid blocking doorways or hogging seats while glued to your phone. Be aware of your surroundings.
Respect the Ride: Don't vandalize or damage the interior. Keep it clean for everyone to enjoy. Writing, drawing, defacing property or feet on seats is a no go!
Remember, a little courtesy goes a long way. Be a respectful rider and make public transport a smooth ride for everyone.
